Effective disaster management and response

Effective disaster management and response

Rapid and efficient response will always have a positive effect during and after any disaster. Natural and man-made events have increased in number and severity and adding new tools, technologies and simulation models to existing national preparedness systems improves resource coordination at the community level.

A group from George Washington University completed a project to study the critical nature of designing an effective response team including the decision-making challenges in which a response manager must evaluate hundreds of possible combinations while taking design configurations into account.

Logistics Planning for a Large Mineral Resources Company

Logistics Planning for a Large Mineral Resources Company

Companies in the mining and energy sectors face many of the same supply chain challenges of other industries. Transportation services, warehouse management, and global services are intertwined in moving equipment and supplies to the work site and shipping cargo to customers. These challenges make it difficult to predict the likely system impact of local decisions or how changes in one part of the system cause undesirable effects to other divisions. In 2013, the largest mineral resources company contracted Goldratt Research Labs and Amalgama to develop a simulation tool that would allow for better decision-making on a day-to-day and long term basis. The project requirements included...]

anyLogistix Version 2.0, Released!

anyLogistix Version 2.0, Released!

We have released the second version of anyLogistix - a new tool for optimizing supply chains and logistics networks. What is anyLogistix? anyLogistix (ALX) - the only multimethod software for supply chain optimization. ALX combines traditional analytical methods of optimization and innovative simulation technology. The combination of different technologies allows you to model and analyze the supply chain, at any level of detail, therefore, finding more effective ways to improve. Who is anyLogistix made for? Companies with large and complex supply chains (i.e. manufacturers, distributors, retailers and logistics providers) can take advantage of anyLogistix. Implementation of ALX is carried out by our partners, consulting companies.

Managing River Logistics with Simulation

Managing River Logistics with Simulation

Inland waterway logistics have their own special aspects that include high seasonality due to weather conditions, long delivery times, restricted door-to-door delivery capabilities, and more. On the other hand, river transport is cheap, environmentally friendly, and allows large amounts of goods to be carried. Barges are widely used to carry both bulk cargo and containers. Simulation can help companies justify switching to river logistics by comparing water transportation to other means in terms of costs, throughput, or shipping time. Shipping operators can use simulation to optimize routing and fleet management policies, taking into account uncertainties, breakdowns, bottlenecks, weather conditions, and water level. The following is a success story of river transport simulation-based optimization in South America.

AnyLogic Logistics Network Manager: Live Demonstration

AnyLogic Logistics Network Manager: Live Demonstration

Recently, Timofey Popkov, Director of Business Development at The AnyLogic Company held a “Simulation Modeling for Logistics Optimization” workshop in Berlin, Germany, covering a range of topics from general benefits of simulation modeling and the various business uses, to how simulation modeling can improve a logistics network and a live demonstration of how it works. Beginning with an explanation of what simulation and modeling software solutions mean for various business challenges (streamline business processes, analyze consumer behavior, prevent bottle necks, optimize supply chains, etc.), the workshop videos also display a comprehensive look into simulation modeling specifically for the logistics network.

Kuehne+Nagel Increase Equipment Utilization from 58% to 94%

Kuehne+Nagel Increase Equipment Utilization from 58% to 94%

Kuehne+Nagel, a leading global provider of logistics solutions assisted a large warehouse in finding the best algorithm for multi-order picking. The large warehouse processes approximately 13,000 orders or 750 picking cartons per day. Eight cartons are positioned on each trolley, but only four can be filled simultaneously due to weighing scales used to increase order picking accuracy. This and random carton placement along the pickers route means a strict algorithm is necessary for building optimal picking tours.
