Last week, a dedicated community of simulation and modeling advocates and experts gathered at WinterSim 2014, in beautiful Savannah, GA. The Winter Simulation Conference (WSC) is the premier international forum for disseminating recent advances in the field of system simulation. In addition to a technical program of unsurpassed scope and quality, WSC provides the central meeting place for simulation practitioners, researchers, and vendors working in all disciplines in industry, service, government, military and academic sectors (WinterSim.org, 2014). AnyLogic received a tremendous welcome from the WSC community at our two hour Vendor workshop on Sunday December 7th. Sixty plus joined Nikolay Churkov, Head of Development and Tom Baggio, Sr. Solutions Architect to learn more about our newest version, 7.1 and the relevant GIS capabilities.

If you have the latest version of Java plugin installed in your browser, you are able to run all of the models on runthemodel.com once again…enjoy! In past few months you may have experienced difficulties running models, receiving an error message that the application was blocked due to security settings. This was due to Oracle, the Java developer, changing security policies, but the problem has been solved and all applets can be run. If you are unfamiliar with RunTheMOdel.com, it is a free model hosting website for AnyLogic users which allows you to export models as Java applets (detailed video instructions can be found at AnyLogic.com).

Recently, Timofey Popkov, Director of Business Development at The AnyLogic Company held a “Simulation Modeling for Logistics Optimization” workshop in Berlin, Germany, covering a range of topics from general benefits of simulation modeling and the various business uses, to how simulation modeling can improve a logistics network and a live demonstration of how it works. Beginning with an explanation of what simulation and modeling software solutions mean for various business challenges (streamline business processes, analyze consumer behavior, prevent bottle necks, optimize supply chains, etc.), the workshop videos also display a comprehensive look into simulation modeling specifically for the logistics network.

A Major Consulting Firm Serving an International Civil Agency chose AnyLogic to evaluate solutions to developing countries potential food insecurity issues. Food security is a complex sustainable development issue, linked to health through malnutrition, but also to sustainable economic development, environment, and trade. Issues such as whether households get enough food, how it is distributed within the household and whether that food fulfills the nutrition needs of all members of the household is an ongoing problem in developing countries.

Kuehne+Nagel, a leading global provider of logistics solutions assisted a large warehouse in finding the best algorithm for multi-order picking. The large warehouse processes approximately 13,000 orders or 750 picking cartons per day. Eight cartons are positioned on each trolley, but only four can be filled simultaneously due to weighing scales used to increase order picking accuracy. This and random carton placement along the pickers route means a strict algorithm is necessary for building optimal picking tours.
