This short tutorial shows how to build a simulation model based on a real-world problem description, using an example of a simple warehouse unloading process model. Also, it teaches to set animation and choose what-if scenarios to test. The AnyLogic User Support Team created the tutorial. The model simulates the arrival of trucks with two types of cartons to a warehouse. Workers unload the cartons, which then move on conveyors to the pallet stacking zone. After palletizing, the goods are moved by forklift trucks to the storage zone. Download the tutorial and accompanying material via our website.

Ben Schumann is a senior modeler at decisionLab, a company in the UK which designs and builds custom models and decision-support tools that help their clients to make evidence-based strategic, tactical and operational decisions. Ben, a significantly experienced AnyLogic user, works with diverse clients such as the MoD, Rolls-Royce or GSK. He handles project delivery from start to end, managing team members, and client communication. Ben Schumann holds a Ph.D. in Complex Systems Simulation and developed an advanced aerospace design simulation model for the early design phase. It was applied for designing several real unmanned aircraft (the first 3D-printed aircraft on the planet, see New Scientist: http://bit.ly/1D3UDSK). Ben enjoyed a thorough training in simulation modelling thanks to his Grad School on Complex Systems Simulation.

Due to the July 2013 Lac Megantic Train Derailment Disaster and increased concerns raised by municipalities across the country, Canadian Government issued a “protective direction” that requires railway companies to share dangerous goods data with municipalities and first responders. Ali Asgary, Associate Professor, Disaster & Emergency Management at York University in Toronto, Canada is an expert in disaster, emergency, and business continuity management. His extensive research and effective teaching are enhanced by his active contributions to the profession and by translating them into real world practices at different levels. Dr. Asgary selected AnyLogic due to it’s multimethod, agent based and GIS capabilities to analyze and address the situation.

The annual System Dynamics conference brings together people from around the world to share important research and application results and to build the community of those active in the field. The 2015 conference theme is “Reinventing Life on a Shrinking Earth.” While Earth has not changed size in absolute terms, it is shrinking with respect to the activity it supports. Complex business and societal challenges have arisen from the increasing activity on the globe that conventional institutional designs have failed to address. System Dynamics uniquely provides a strategic framework to explore the challenges of a shrinking Earth, giving a greater understanding and exposing counter-intuitive insights that allow us to reinvent our institutions and our lives. Increasing Rail Capacity Utilization in Port of Hamburg

Over ninety percent of the world’s trade containerized, and in the Port of Hamburg in Germany over nine million containers are transshipped every year. Till now the early provision of information for both the estimated time of arrival (ETA) of vessels and containers is not established. Containers are offloaded and stored at terminals, and then they are usually sent by ground transportation to their further destinations. This hinterland part of the supply chain can often become a bottleneck because if a deep-sea vessel gets delayed, it can complicate further shipment processes. Furthermore, the terminal has no information about the hinterland mode selected or the time of off-loading a certain container (first or last).
